Incentive Package - Basilicata

Basilicata is the ultimate destination for companies who prefer a mix between impressive natural sceneries, historic buildings and monuments, a tasty local kitchen and the spontaneous atmosphere of a community that isn't commercialized by the call of mass tourism.

Along the Tyrrhenian seaboard nature takes in both mountain and sea, creating a vision that embraces every Italian landscape possible. Of special interest, the city of Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the "Sassi di Matera" (meaning "stones of Matera"). The Sassi originate from a prehistoric (troglodyte) settlement, and are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy. The Sassi are houses dug into the rock itself, known locally as "Tufo", which is characteristic of Basilicata and Puglia. Many of these "houses" are really only caverns, and the streets in some parts of the Sassi often are located on the rooftops of other houses.

The ancient town grew in height on one slope of the ravine created by a river that is now a small stream. The ravine is known locally as "la Gravina". This region offers small, lovely receptive structures but, best of all, people that want to show you the best their region has to offer!

Although Basilicata produces only one DOC wine, the quality of it is such that it ranks at the forefront among the best known and appreciated Italian reds. Aglianico, the name of the original grape, is a corruption of the word "Hellenic" or Greek. In fact, as there are no native grapes in this region, the plant was brought over by the Greeks when they settled there in pre-Roman times. The result is that this grape was made into wine long before many native varieties in the northern regions. The Greeks planted many vines in the zones around the Mount Volture from which some of the best Aglianico still comes today. The single DOC, Aglianico del Volture, was named after this area as well.

The airports that serve this region are both located in the Puglia region: Bari and Brindisi.
